Body mass index (BMI) allows to estimate the weight of a person. It takes into account the size and mass.

It is the world Organization of health (who), which has implemented this index (1997) as the value of « reference » to assess the risks associated with being overweight.

Insurance companies use this index to determine the risk of cerebrovascular accident at their (future) policyholders. From this data, among other things, insurers can vary premiums, or even refuse some records.

This index is mainly used to highlight the worsening of the risk factors. It does not determine the value of the fat mass and even less muscle and bone mass.
